you made it on your own you think but you don't know well that is with you now forget the "whys" and "hows" time crept up on you you see and found you hanging on by the skin of your teeth well that might be true this is me believing you is that so wrong cause i don't know i swear by the good of the lord it's time to hit the road oh the places that you can go forget you history and wash it down with drink but when you're out there all alone all those faces that you have known they'll come to haunt you then take it from a friend it's where i've been i swear that have been here before we work for a living we drive through the cities we sleep in on weekends we heed the words of all of our preachers and we'd like to invite you now uh-hu alright speak to me please but baby don't lie
2.
so the story goes there was a man he rode alone across the plains and through the snow he rode a long time he had left his home his baby girl his little boy his only love her only joy his favorite tree where he would go enjoy the shade all alone he left it all he had left with hope but all he found a river bed a quiet place to rest his head were you to go to that place he found a lonely soul you'd hear the sound of all the years wasted away along the edge of that river bank and then you'd know and i'm a little like him i don't know where i'm going but i know where i've been

a bird without a song a man without a name he'll come to you like he came to me and this is what he'll say "the good work of the lord, you can question if you dare, but that aint gona get you anywhere..." it's curtains for you kid so long you had the brains, but not the brawn the right words, to the wrong song and now it's time for you to go to that place you've dared not go you can mark it by the crying of the crow oh the things, that you wish you had known she, was the one who begot an only son he divided the nations boiled the sea turned the world against you and me the good lord said, with all his wisdom, "this is what i will do, i'm gona make a believer out of you..."

how did you hope to sing me a song, when you didn't even know the words? how could you think that you'd done yourself wrong, when you didn't even know the rules? why did you say that you were gone, when you didn't even leave your room? to afraid to believe in anything, so you turned your back to everything you knew? but i know that you're a dreamer and baby that's fine your dreams have a way of become mine did that day last a life time long? did it come, did it go, to soon? cause i know, that you're a dreamer and baby that's fine your dreams have a way of become mine

as far i figure some things can't be ignored like your skin, and how it's holding you together you wander like a thought just like a whisper in the dark right now, but tomorrow i might not remember i tried to call you, but you were gone our hearts, want what they want even if it's wrong "the value of a whole, is worth more than it's parts" well he took his skill to bullshit and he made it into an art and had me singing along to some very unfortunate song i tried to call you, but you were gone our hearts, want what they want even if it's wrong well i've got something i'd like to confess you're the one, you were always the one who understood me best we spoke our own language we made our own sense i tried to call you, but you were gone our hearts, want what they want even if it's wrong called to shore by your siren song
8.
went down to the river styx and paid my toll how my lies would you live to save your soul? i saw you cast down like a spell oh my angel how you fell where fate intersects with life, love and destiny it's all a mess of ups and downs and in betweens a saw you standing like a wraith on the burnt side of st. peter's gates might make no difference what you believe and right and wrong are different ends of the same street just ride your doubt beyond the grave ride it on to another plan be cool stay calm try to speak slowly and tell me what is wrong it's not fair it's not right my lord i swear i lived a decent life the choice was yours you see and now the devil takes what's his yea the devil takes what's his i said the devil takes what's his take it from me
9.
i think that you became what you wanted something else that you thought you'd forgotten did things figure out, the way you said? the future clear inside your head i'm not convinced that you believe a word you say i suppose they are nothing but words now anyway like a pipe that's sprung a leak and floods the house your brain can't talk to your heart, it just comes out your mouth these thoughts take form, a spark inside my brain translated to one more poor refrain "they are nothing more than means to this end," you might have heard me say forgive me for turning my back from the dark to the day but i don't feel like that at least not today
10.
even though you think you're standing still you're still moving through space the earth she spins and gravity it pulls you into place it's all that i can do not to float away the earth you see under my feet is very much a part of me far below the surface far from the shore that's where i first met you on the ocean's floor there we would rest forever more i do believe the ocean deep will ebb and flow in-spite of me back to ocean, back to sea back to forest, back to tree death she holds no mystery no surprise for you nor me back to bird, back to bee back to river, back to creek you can't see the air you breath but you breath it anyway
11.
you've been doing what your told since you were 8 years old still you're needing me like its ever gona be that easy you are well on your way to the man you'll be one day you've got to keep your head clean so you don't forget anything "anything, that you want, it can all be yours my son" oh-oh, oh-oh no-oh, no-oh you might just become secrets you own the people, the places, the things you've known aint it strange how the world around you changed? even though you're being you well do you really think that is true? case i'm inclined, to believe that you are the life you lead oh-oh, oh-oh no-oh, no-oh you might just become the secrets you own the people the places the things you've known
